Essentials To Bring In Your Beach Bag

While the beach is your time to be laid back and relaxed, a beach day still requires some light preparation. One of the most important tasks in preparing for your ocean getaway is packing a beach bag. A beach bag requires a completely different rotation of products than your purse or suitcase does. Some items you may not have considered will probably turn out to be absolute essentials that you will regret overlooking. Here are some suggestions:

A good book: If you’re in between dips in the sea but bored of simply laying out in the sun, a good book is a perfect activity to stimulate your brain. There’s nothing more relaxing than reclining back into your beach chair, soaking up some rays, and breathing in the fresh, salty air, while reading some compelling prose (or poetry if that’s what you’re into). Some recommendations? Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple, and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

Another essential you should not do without is a bottle of water. If you’re going to be spending all day at the beach, skip the typical Poland Spring and opt for a one-quart water bottle. It’s essential that you stay hydrated while spending an extended period of time on the beach on a warm day, even if you aren’t going to be engaging in vigorous activity. Sweating dehydrates your body, so make up for that with lots of water. A larger bottle is necessary because chances are, you aren’t going to have easy access to a refill. So think smart, and drink water as much as you’d reapply your sunscreen (a lot).

Some healthy snacks: If you’re spending all day at the beach with no bungalow to go back to, you’d better pack a lunch or some snacks. You must recharge your body during a day in the sun where swimming or simply laying out on the sand is taking place. Try to avoid things with salt so that your bikini body doesn’t get bloated. Try something like nuts, kale chips, sunflower seeds, edamame, fruit, or granola bars to keep your hunger at bay.

A no-brainer: Sunglasses. Do we need to explain why? Well, probably not. However, make sure that your sunglasses do protect your eyes from harmful UVA/UVB rays. Otherwise, you may want to invest in a new, protective pair for your ocean outing.

Waterproof mascara: While wearing makeup to the beach is a contentious topic, we maintain that a little definition to the eyes won’t hurt anyone–as long as it’s waterproof. You do not want to get panda eyes at the beach, so please make sure you pack a waterproof formula like The Maybelline One By One Waterproof or Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes. Either one will ensure your mascara will last all day and night through swimming and sweating.

A great beach playlist: Some happy surf music should be in the background no matter what. Taking the time to listen to the ocean waves is great, but when that really loud family with tons of kids pitches their umbrella next to yours, you’re going to wish you brought your noise-cancelling headphones. Some obvious summer music would be the Beach Boys and Bob Marley–but we’d also recommend the Drums, who are like a modern day version of the Beach Boys, Daft Punk’s latest record, and of course, the quintessential summer song, “Steal My Sunshine” by Len.

SPF Lipbalm: While the importance of sunscreen is so stressed it almost borders on irritating, even the most fervent sunscreen faithful often overlook the lips–but they are crucial nonetheless, and anyone who has ever gotten sunburned on their pucker can tell you why. It’s beyond painful to talk, eat, or move your mouth in any capacity–plus it looks totally crazy. Luckily, a lot of well-known brands make lip balms with SPF these days. They include Burt’s Bees, Aveeno, Nivea, Carmex, and Blistex, to name a few.

There you go! All of the essentials you need to make your beach trip the best one ever. Just don’t forget one more thing: smooth skin. While these are all suggestions of what to bring to the beach, beautiful hairless skin is a MUST!
