“Laser Isn’t Safe for Dark Skin” Myth Is Outdated
Laser hair removal targets melanin — the pigment that gives your hair (and skin) its color. Energy travels down the hair shaft, heats the follicle, and disables regrowth. The challenge for deeper skin tones: dark skin holds more melanin in the epidermis, so an improperly chosen wavelength can be absorbed by the skin instead of the hair, raising the risk of burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark spots that linger after inflammation.
