Winter and Dry Skin

We agree with you, this winter has been strange and the temperatures have been very unpredictable. This winter has brought us many joys, such as snowfall, hot chocolate, and cozy blankets but also has come with a downside: dry and itchy skin.

Why Does Skin Dryness Occur in Winter?

During the winter season, the air is colder and drier, leading to a drop in humidity levels. As a result, the moisture from our skin evaporates faster, leaving it dry and itchy. Additionally, we tend to take hot showers or baths during winter, which can strip our skin of its natural oils, leading to further dryness. Furthermore, low temperatures can also slow down the production of sebum, which is responsible for keeping the skin moisturized.

Tips to Avoid or Treat Skin Dryness in Winter

  1. Moisturize: It's crucial to keep the skin moisturized during the winter season. Choose a moisturizer that is oil-based as it will create a protective layer on the skin, preventing moisture loss. Apply it after taking a shower or bath and throughout the day as necessary.

  2. Take Shorter Showers: While taking hot showers or baths is tempting during winter, it's best to avoid them or limit their duration. Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to further dryness.

  3. Use a Humidifier: Humidifiers are an excellent way to add moisture to the air, preventing skin dryness. Use a humidifier in your bedroom or living room to add moisture to the air, making it easier for your skin to retain moisture.

  4. Drink Water: Drinking water is crucial for keeping the skin hydrated from the inside. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day, and you will notice a significant improvement in your skin's appearance and texture.

  5. Avoid Harsh Skincare Products: During the winter season, it's best to avoid skincare products that contain alcohol or fragrance, as they can be harsh and lead to further dryness.

  6. Protect Your Skin: Wear gloves, scarves, and hats when you go outside to protect your skin from the harsh winter weather. Additionally, apply sunscreen on exposed areas, as the sun's rays can still be damaging, even in the winter.

  7. Exfoliate: Once or twice a week. We highly recommend dry brushing before taking a shower. Always exfoliate gently and moisturize the skin after.

Winter is a beautiful season, but it can be harsh on our skin. Skin dryness is a common issue during the winter season, but it's essential to take care of our skin to avoid or treat it. By following the tips mentioned above, you can keep your skin moisturized, healthy, and glowing during the winter season.
