How Laser Treatments Work

Laser hair removal is the fastest, easiest, and most cost effective way to see permanent hair reduction.
Depending on the size of the area you can be in and out of your appointment in as little as 10 minutes.
So how does it work?

Laser treatments work by permanently damaging follicles that are actively producing hair. Not all of your
hair grows at the same time, so you need multiple sessions for permanent results. The light of the laser
is attracted to the pigment in your hair. The hair shaft absorbs the laser’s light, allowing the heat of the
laser to travel into your skin, down to the follicle. This heat dries up the tiny blood vessel that feeds the
follicle, stunting its ability to produce hair.

This is why we advise all of our clients to not pluck or tweeze. The hair in your skin is the path the laser
uses to affect the follicle. When you pull the hair out by the root the laser has no way to penetrate the
skin. Any laser treatments after recent waxing or plucking will be completely ineffective.

Why do I need to shave before my treatment?

Shaving creates a clear path for the laser to damage the follicle. Not shaving means the hair will burn up
on your skin’s surface during treatment, possibly causing side effects like pigmentation or discoloration.
So, be sure to shave as much as you can before coming in. If you miss a spot, not to worry. Our
technicians can take care of any spots you’ve missed.

What happens after treatment?

After your appointment you may look a little sunburned. That irritation should clear up within the hour. Clients with coarse, thick hair may see bumps or red dots. This is normal. Your follicles are irritated and
are reacting to the treatment. This will clear up in a couple of days.

After treatment you can apply aloe and sunscreen to the area. If you experience any itching, cortisone
cream can be used to ease it. Hot water and exercise should be avoided for 24 hours. If you’ve had your
underarms or face treated, deodorant and make up should also not be used for the rest of the day. Treat
your skin gently. No harsh acne or antiaging products should be applied to the area. Stick to lukewarm
water.

Around 2 weeks later you will notice hair. Many mistake this for new hair growth. Actually this is the old hair shedding off. Don’t pluck it. Use a gentle exfoliator and it should shed right off. After that, the hair that grows in will be much finer and softer. It should start coming in right before your next appointment.
