Ask an Esthetician: 5 Laser Hair Removal Questions You’re Too Embarrassed to Ask

Laser hair removal is one of the most sought-after beauty treatments for a reason—it’s efficient, long-lasting, and can completely transform your grooming routine. But even with all the buzz around it, many people still feel unsure about the process itself.

The truth is: you’re not the only one with awkward questions. These are the kinds of things clients wonder about but often don’t ask out loud—and honestly, we get it. Some topics feel too personal, and others just seem too “silly” to ask.

But here’s the thing—there’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your body, your skin, and your confidence.

So here are four real, unfiltered questions we hear behind closed doors—answered with clarity, honesty, and zero judgment.

1. “Do I really need to shave before my appointment?”

Yes. You should shave the area being treated, ideally 12 to 24 hours before your session. This helps the laser focus on the pigment in the follicle beneath the skin’s surface, which is where the magic happens.

Why shaving matters:

  • Visible hair can burn, leading to irritation or less effective results

  • Shaving preserves the follicle, unlike waxing or plucking, which remove the root the laser needs to find

If you’re not sure exactly how much to shave or how to approach more intimate areas, don’t guess. Reach out before your appointment. It's completely normal to ask.

2. “Can I get laser during my period?”

Yes, absolutely. Being on your period doesn’t disqualify you from getting laser hair removal—even in intimate areas.

Just keep in mind:

  • Use a clean tampon or menstrual cup

  • Let your provider know ahead of time

  • Be prepared for slightly increased sensitivity (hormonal shifts during your cycle can heighten pain response)

Some people prefer to wait until after their cycle to feel more at ease—and that’s totally fine too. There’s no pressure either way.

Comfort is key. If you’re feeling unsure, you’re welcome to reschedule—no questions asked.

3. “Is it normal to have hair between the cheeks?”

Completely. The perianal area (yes, that area) is one of the most commonly treated zones during a Brazilian laser session.

We repeat: it is 100% normal and nothing to feel self-conscious about.

Laser hair removal is not just for the “front.” Many people opt for a full Brazilian to include the perianal area for hygiene, comfort, or personal preference. If you're not sure what areas are included in your treatment, just ask. Your provider will walk you through it with no judgment.

What grows naturally can be treated confidently—and privately.

4. “Will laser make me sweat or smell more?”

This is a common misconception. Laser hair removal doesn't alter your sweat glands or increase body odor—but you may notice changes simply because there’s less hair to absorb moisture.

Here’s what’s actually happening:

  • Hair traps bacteria and sweat—removing it can change how your skin feels

  • After laser, you may feel smoother, but also notice sweat more easily

  • Friction from tight clothes + open follicles = possible irritation

Aftercare is key:

  • Skip deodorant or heavy lotions for 24–48 hours

  • Wear breathable, loose fabrics

  • Keep the area clean and dry

These steps prevent blocked pores, irritation, and help your skin heal smoothly.

Every body is different. Every question is valid. And every client deserves to feel informed and comfortable before starting laser hair removal.

Whether it’s your first time or you're halfway through a package, know that you’re not alone in wondering about the things no one talks about.

At the end of the day, the more you know, the more confident you’ll feel—and that’s what it’s all about.
